Meat Free

September 29, 2008

When Kristi was here we were talking about eating (because eating and sleeping are our most favorite things) and she was telling me how she read something about how we should all try to have one meat free day a week to help save the environment from global warming.

I Googled and found this:

“The world’s leading expert on global warming says people should either eat less meat or have one meat-free day a week to make a personal contribution to help tackle climate change.

Dr Rajendra Pachauri, chair of the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, won the Nobel Peace Prize along with Al Gore. Pachauri told The Observer that eating less meat is one of the solutions for Global Warming, and individuals can play their own part in making positive change.

He said cattle and animals raised for meat production cause huge greenhouse gas emissions and other environmental problems including habitat destruction. Cattle produce methane which is a far more deadly pollutant than carbon emissions from vehicles. Methane is 23 times more effective as a global warming agent than carbon dioxide.”source

Yesterday when I was grocery shopping I remembered this, and my earlier promise to myself to eat less meat, and I tried my best to find some meat free meals.

I don’t know if I can do an entire day free of meat, but I can definitely do several meals a week without it. That’s pretty much the same thing, maybe even better. Plus fish is not as harmful to the environment, and I am trying to eat more of that. I also eat lots of chicken, so that’s not so bad either.

I bought some soy products, veggie burgers, rice and pasta. I love rice and I could eat that alone as a meal, especially vermicelli and rice. Actually if I could live on rice, cheese, pasta and chili, I SO would. Ooh, I should have bought some soy cheese. I need to get off the real cheese.

I bought some soy hot dogs and then it occurred to me that I can’t eat hot dogs without chili and my chili at home has meat, so I wanted to buy some other chili.

I crack myself up because I grabbed the turkey chili and then stood there for a second trying to figure out why it seemed wrong… and it actually took me a good minute to realize turkey was meat. Then I found the veggie chili with beans, but eeuuw. So I decided to stick with the chili I had at home… the MEAT chili. Next time I will buy the turkey chili because at least turkeys don’t put out as much pollution as cows. Normally I get the 100% beef hot dogs, so I am helping a little by getting soy. Baby steps!
