The Target Saga Continues

May 31, 2007

Tuesday night I went into Target to have them fix my schedule, and to change my availability. There was nobody in the office, and the two managers on duty… well, I just don’t have much confidence in them, so I left without having accomplished anything. I don’t know what I thought I was gaining by waiting. It’s not like any of the other managers are any better.

Wednesday night I was scheduled to work at 6. I went in an had to take another test because the test they gave me a few weeks ago was wrong. Again, the people I asked didn’t know how to set up the test, but luckily (for who?) an off duty employee was in the office and she knew how to set it up.

After the test I had to “train” with the Lead on Duty. Which turned out to be sitting in the office while he went over a very detailed checklist of things I should be trained on, and pretended I had been trained. There was a lot of “you could figure this out” and “I don’t know what that is.” It was apparent that these sheets were to have been filled out each night and there was a structured training plan that I was not fortunate enough to have received. Thanks.

I talked to the manager about changing my schedule and they signed off to give me every Saturday and Tuesday off, so now they can’t schedule me too many days in a row. I also got her to give me this Thursday and Friday off. She told me to go to the operator desk and have her scratch me off the schedule for both days.

I went to the operator with the intention of doing just that, however, I wasn’t on the schedule, so it wasn’t possible. That place is SO inconsistent. I walked away and then decided to go back and check the rest of the schedule to see how it compared to what I was given. Her schedule didn’t show me to be working Saturday or Sunday either… so I didn’t plan on going in. However, later in the night the manager mentioned that I was scheduled to work Sunday night. That place has no idea what’s going on. Who knows if I’ll show up or not.

The rest of the night was spent working cleaning up aisles. The Lead took me over to towels to show me how to properly fold a towel and place it on the shelf. Really? He spent about 10 minutes explaining how to put them on the shelf and fold them, then asked me to fold one for him. I folded it in about three seconds and he exclaimed, “Wow, you’re a quick study!” REALLY? It’s folding towels! This isn’t rocket science!

He comes around all night while I’m working to tell me how good of a job I’m doing. It’s crazy. It’s literally pulling things forward on a shelf. Who can’t do this? At least that’s what I thought until I walked other people’s aisles and saw that some people apparently CAN’T handle the challenge. LAZY and INCOMPETENT is what I would call those people.

One of the main reasons I hate closing is that they have too many teenagers working and ever person under 18 has to be sent home at 10. So you’d think they’d be smart and not schedule those kids to close, or at least schedule enough older people so that there would be enough staff to close. Nope, doesn’t happen! We were all scheduled to leave at 11, but didn’t get out of there until 12. I was pissed.

The combination of the under 18s going home and the other teenagers calling in “sick” leaves us understaffed every night. I say, ban all hiring of people under 25. Let’s start a petition!

I’m so glad I’m off tonight. My allergies are killing me and I’m extremely congested. My feet are in pain as well. I worked 6 hours last night and you know it’s all walking. That’s all we do is walk the store all night. I’m too pretty to be walking that much. I need a cart, golf cart, or a least a child’s electric riding toy.

My plan now is to go back to the cleaning business. I’m working on getting my business officially set up, with the Employer ID number, DBA, and sales tax certificate. Next I will need to get bonded and insured, then I will start doing make-readys. I won’t clean homes that are occupied anymore. People are just too nasty… and usually if they are dirty, then they are also cluttered. You can’t clean around clutter effectively.

Ok, that’s it I have to say.
